A necessary tool for welding.

There is a better one available from , BUT one must buy the welder it comes with. This one is less than 1% of that price. When welding, the energy put into the weld determines the depth of penetration, assuming the same base metal and filler metal. For steel the most common rule of thumb is 1 Ampere per thousandth of penetration. This gauge allows one to quickly determine the starting point. It is a hard stainless (so wear and corrosion should be minimal), and easily can be kept on a lanyard or key ring. A caliper or micrometer is more accurate, but less rugged and, generally, more expensive. While a plasma cutter does not have as easy a rule of thumb, most have charts which give settings based on the metal's thickness. This is VERY handy for setting the initial current and pressure.Decent price, rugged, easy to use, etc.
